Mediterranean Modern

The Tour begins in the Southwestern corner of France, on the Mediterranean Sea, where the sculptor Aristide Maillol (Banyuls-sur-Mer) was born, as was Fauvism (Collioure) and Cubism (Ceret).

Then to Arles and Saintes-Maries-de-la-mer (Camargue) where Vincent Van Gogh created so many masterpieces. Aix-en-Provence was the home of Paul Cezanne whom many credit as an important painter at the beginnings of Modern Art.

Proceeding along the coast we stop in Saint Tropez, where Pointillist friends of Paul Signac came to visit; Antibes, a favorite of Picasso; Biot, home of the Fernand Leger Museum, and Cagnes-sur-Mer, where Renoir spent his final years.

Nice has so many wonderful artistic sights such as the Matisse Museum, Chagal Museum, and the Musée international d'Art naïf Anatole Jakovsky. Not to mention the spectacular Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art as well as the Musee des Beaux Arts. Even the tram system has artistic elements.

Monte Carlo was the home of the great Kees von Dongen. Now we can see his artwork there.

We'll also visit Marseille, and on the way back to Barcelona, we stop in Figueres, home of Salvador Dali. Sights in Barcelona include the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, the Fondacio Joan Miro, and all that Gaudi.
